A Long Way from Chicago

I have been reading A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck with my students and I have to say that this was a very fun book. I think we'll read the sequel when we finish this one. I haven't had as much time as I would like to read with my students because they have had so many projects for other classes, but hopefully, things will settle down and we can get back to a routine.

Richard Peck is one of my favorite YA authors! The sequel to A Long Way From Chicago is good also. One of the first years I was a librarian, I had to present a book talk at a conference. I was scared enough to be presenting in front of the group, but when Richard Peck himself walked in, I just about died! He was a very nice man, though, and complimented me on my booktalk.

Am I thinking of the correct author? Is this the same author that wrote A Day No Pigs Would Die? When I taught ninth grade, what was then Basic English, the book was a favorite of mine and students. It was so rich in such a variety of different things like themes, dialect, characterizations, that I think it would still be a favorite of students.

Well, Colleen, we still have a class set of them (tattered though they are) down in the English dept bookroom; feel free to teach it in drama. Maybe your class can turn it into a series of vignettes or do a whole blown-out production of it! Maybe Richard Peck could show up for that too. :) You never know. . . You are right though: the good ones never die! That's why I still love "To His Coy Mistress," which my seniors think is the 'hottest' thing they've ever read in English class.

Libby and Colleen,
There are two R Pecks! Richard Peck wrote A Long Way From Chicago and Robert Newton Peck wrote A Day No Pigs would die.

Both are great authors, but very different personalities!

We have books by both men in the library.
