Starting New

With this semester coming to an end and a new semester only days away I am trying to figure out how to start my new semester with something RAISSE-ish. I have a book "What is Science" that I am going to read-aloud to my students and have them come up with thier own definition of science.

Does any one else have good starting semester activities that they typically do or are going to try for the first time?

I also have a book "The Math Curse" that I plan to read-aloud to my students. The students will then have to create their own storybook involving a math curse. The story must tell about one day in the students's life(beginning when the student wakes up)and at least ten word problems must be used in the storyline. I have also developed a story writing rubric for grading this project. I am excited and can't wait to see the final products. I'll let you know how it goes.

I am trying to find a book on lab safety to read to chemistry and marine science class the first day next semester. Any suggestion.

Does anyone know of a book like that for foreign language...specifically Spanish? I'm planning to play a "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" game with the students on the first day that covers some interesting information on Spanish speaking countries and the importance of learning Spanish. But I would love to do something more literacy focused.

What level is your science read aloud book-a childrens book? I would also like to start the new semester with a read aloud and find out what they think about science or follow mjeffcoat's idea with something on lab safety. Your input would be appreciated.

My read-aloud is on a 1st grade level. I just simply ask the question "What is Science?" and have my students give an answer. The great thing for me about the book is that as there is actually not any Physical Science in the book I read. My favorite line is "We question the how, the where, when and why. We question, we wonder, we hunt and explore."

For lab safety I have a situation with Sponge Bob where the students have to identify everything that they are doign wrong and tell why. Its short, and sometimes I think a little cheey, but it gets them to at least look at a situation and think about it.
